This bird’s-eye view and its 1876 counterpart, both by Charles Parsons, reveal technological advancements and changes in commercial practice for lithographers like Currier & Ives. Currier & Ives had applied chromolithography to its popular city view genre, and its garish colors are a marked departure from the 1856 print’s watercolor washes. Parsons was an important artist for Currier & Ives before becoming Art Director at Harper’s Weekly in 1863.
