This wood engraving of the Republican-nominated presidential candidate was copied from the photograph taken by Mathew Brady in February of 1860. An accompanying text epitomizes Lincoln through his physical description and temperament. “Old Uncle Abe” stands “long and wiry” at six feet three inches tall, with a “sharp and powerful” voice. The affordability of the illustrated press facilitated the wide distribution of Lincoln’s image during his campaign for the presidency. Sixty-seven different tintype campaign badges also circulated this image of Lincoln during the 1860s.
