Brady’s studios, like those of his competitors, featured a central gallery where well-dressed men and women gazed at the visages of the famous, specimens of the photographic artist’s work, along with landscapes and city views, in the familiar setting of a public parlor. Behind the genteel salon stood a series of rooms devoted to various specialized functions of portrait making, from preparing the plates to finishing.
