In February of 1863, the four Harper Brothers were photographed at Brady’s Tenth Street gallery. James and John Harper, apprenticed to New York City printers, started their printing business in 1817. Their two younger brothers Joseph Wesley Harper and Fletcher Harper joined them and the company changed its name to Harper and Brothers in 1833.
